Chase was exhausted, another day done and he really just wanted to fall asleep. He stumbled into the small medical quarters and found Jay already asleep in their bed. He sighed and pushed in alongside him, leaving him enough room. There, lying down, he took a deep breath and was already asleep the moment his head hit the pillow.

It was a very short time later that the dream began.

In the dream, there was no land, only water. A teenage girl stood upon, barefoot in a white dress. Her hair was pulled up and her nose was just a little perky.

"Rob," she called out, and her voice was sweet and high, with a hint of drawl.

The girl laughed, and reached out for his hand. "You know who I am. You stole something from me."

"You took the only thing I ever loved," she said, her eyes flashing with a steely look. "You stole it!"

"Now you get it, don't you?" asked Julia. Death had removed much of her accent, curiously, and she was paler and thinner than she'd been in life. "You stole him."

"He's with you," she said mournfully. "He's not with me." She turned to look at the horizon, sky against water, with a faint sprinkling of trees.

"That's not very nice," said Julia, crossing her arms. She grabbed his hand, and hers was cold to the touch. "Come with me."

"To the place I died," she told him, and they began to walk across the water, and it went by fast, speeding by in streaks of blue.

There was still no solid land where they stopped, only a large grove of trees.

"Too late. We're already here."

Julia turned to watch as Joshua's head broke the surface, and then his wings, lifting him out of the water, where he lay on the glassy mirror of it.

"I died. Why isn't he with me?"

(Anonymous) 2006-01-27 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm going to take him, one way or another," said Julia soothingly. Her icy hand was still clamping down on his wrist. "He belongs with me."

(Anonymous) 2006-01-27 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
"He can now," said Julia, and tilted her head back. The sky was full of stars now. "I died for him. What did YOU do?"

(Anonymous) 2006-01-27 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
The girl's grip tightened to bruising. "I sacrficed everything. I took myself out of the world for him."

(Anonymous) 2006-01-27 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
The grip on Chase's arm only got tighter. "And you would have done what? I did what you do when someone you love is gone. I lay myself down."

(Anonymous) 2006-01-27 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
The pressure on Chase's arm disappeared as the words came out of his mouth. Julia's hand had gone through him.

She stepped away, twirling towards the image of the fallen Joshua. Facing Chase, she said, "Maybe he's yours after all, then." Rolling the limp boy over, she sat herself on his chest. "I'm as much you as I'm me, so you should pay attention, shouldn't you?"
