On the third day, Chase awoke feeling rested -- awoke to the sun already hanging precariously high in the sky, betraying the later hour of the day. He turned, sitting up and grasping his t-shirt. In the heat of the night, he'd thrown it off.

Craning his head, he tried to check the colouring of his back -- damn pale skin betrayed bruises too easily. He sighed and got up to pack up the bag, ready to head back to responsibility. As it turned out, he couldn't even escape properly for two days.

"Jay," he murmured, leaning back down to kiss Jay awake, soft kisses pressed to his shoulder, jaw, lips. "Hey, angel," he added with a smirk. "Time to go."

Chase frowned. "What?" He had no idea what Jay was talking about and he bent swiftly to grab his bag, keeping at Jay's side in case he needed to help him walk.

Jay was able to walk fairly well, shuffling across the sand with Chase. "I mean. You realize you jus' fought off a dinosaur?"

"Jay," his voice was stressed and thin. "You didn't leave me much choice, you know. And now I lost my scalpel." He continued hurrying along, brushing his forehead across his eyes when small droplets of blood -- some his, mostly the dinosaurs -- fell into his eyes.

Jay flushed. "Sorry. He was gonna... I couldn'..." He sighed, and when the campsite was no longer visible, he detour towards the treeline, where a small stream tributary was visible.

He knelt, and scrubbed the water over his face.

"You had to be macho, didn't you?" Chase smirked, and teased Jay. He slung his backpack onto his back and crouched down to do the same, cleaning up the blood from out of his eyes and his hair, off his face, leaving only the scratches from the brambles, which were bleeding very slowly.

Jay protested the teasing only slightly. "Hey, I was once a fine-tuned killin' machine. That thing started comin' at us, an' havin' you with me... instinct an' adrenaline kicked in."

How different from a anti-mutant suit was a dinosaur anyway?

With a wet hand, Jay gently wiped one of the scratches clean.

Chase winced at the stinging sensation just slightly. "Let's get back, okay? I'll clean up there." He glanced down at his shirt. "Well, one more shirt and pair of jeans soaked in blood."

Jay flushed harder. "I'm sorry," he said. It was still hard, when all was said and done, to be rid of the training that said go and fight.

Chase turned to Jay. "Why are you apologizing?" he inquired, bending over and dipping his hair into the water, washing it out. He frowned as he realized how long it'd become. "Honestly, Jay, it's fine. Now, sit down, I need to check if you're fine."

Because I should have done better.

Jay gave him a tired half-smile, and sat down obedianty, his guitar case nestled at his side. "Yessuh," he said, which translated to yes, sir.

Chase crouched down, prying Jay's eyelids open with his fingers, checking for dilation. "Tell me your full name, and then I want you to give me a brief history of your time here on the island."

"Joshua Guthrie," said Jay trying not to blink. "I, um, got here all bleedin', an' you fixed me up an' I prolly fell in love with you shortly thereafter. I started makin' some moonshine that people bitch about but drink anyways because that shit would give an elephant a buzz. Uh, an' now I'm being checked out 'cos I attacked a dinosaur."

Chase eased into a kneel, giving Jay a surprised and touched look. "You fell in love with me just after I patched you up?" he inquired softly, blinking in awe.

"I think you've got a concussion," he said, more professionally.

It was that Irish-Kentucky background that allowed him to go bright red again. "Well, uh, mebbe I did, but I din't figure it out until later. You know. Do concussions always make you say embarrassin' things?"

"Typically just make you wish your head were exploding to rid the pain," Chase said sympathetically, easing up and kissing Jay's forehead slowly and softly.

"Just a concussion," he said gratefully.

Jay smiled, also grateful. "If'n you're gonna fuss, ain't so bad. The concussion part. Din't mean to scare you any." He'd thought Chase had looked pretty freaked, even if he'd handled it really well.

"You did, a little," he admitted. "It was the part when you just lunged for a dinosaur, Jay! That's...not exactly normal."

"It coulda hurt you," said Jay softly. "I..."

He shuddered as Julia's dead face came back to mind.

Chase frowned, stroking Jay's cheek. "Could have run," he pointed out. "Wouldn't have gone without you is all."

Jay closed his eyes, leaning into the touch. "Scars, is all. On the mind."

"The past?" he asked softly. "Jay, what's in that head of yours?"

"I had to try," Jay said softly. "Even if I couldn' do anythin', I had to give it a try." He opened his eyes, the image of Julia remaining on retinas even then, standing behind Chase and looking reproachful. He blinked several more times.

Chase watched Jay carefully. "Nice and deep breaths, this might still be shock from blacking out."

"Is that why I'm seein' things?"

Must have been a harder knock to the head than he'd seen. "You might hallucinate depending on the severity of the blow, yeah."
